The Lifeline Network Honors Its 2 Millionth Call!

The National Suicide Prevention Lifeline network of 147 crisis centers answered its two millionth call since its launch on January 1, 2005. “Relatively few people realize how pervasive suicide attempts and suicidal thoughts are in our society – SAMHSA studies show that 8.3 million American adults seriously contemplated suicide in the past year, with 1.1 million adults actually attempting it,” said SAMHSA Administrator, Pamela S. Hyde, J.D. “Fortunately the Lifeline has made a remarkable difference in saving the lives of countless Americans by shining a light on this problem and providing a source of hope and help to those in crisis.” To read the SAMHSA press release about this milestone, click here.

The Lifeline Welcomes El Paso’s Intake & Crisis Emergency Services to the Network

This year, organizations are focusing on the theme of “Live Your Life Well” and are motivating activists, organizations and communities to promote mental health and wellness. The Lifeline announces stipends for 20 of its more than 140 crisis centers

This supplemental grant is the first in the history of the Lifeline and will enable centers to increase their capacity to answer calls by enhancing staffing, equipment, or infrastructure; allow centers to reach out to individuals facing severe economic stress; or provide centers with tools to follow-up with individuals at high risk of suicide. The Lifeline Network Now Has 146 Centers in 49 States

Lifeline’s national network now has 146 crisis centers in 49 states. Calls to 1-800-273-TALK (8255) are routed to the closest available center based on the caller’s location. Lifeline strives to connect callers to network centers that can provide referrals to local services, allowing the caller to access continuing care after a crisis. By recruiting 146 crisis centers, the Lifeline’s Network Development division has expanded the capacity of Lifeline’s network and improved the quality of Lifeline’s service.

Veterans Can Chat Live Through New Online Service

The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) and Lifeline launched an online chat service for veterans in emotional distress available at: www.suicidepreventionlifeline.org/Veterans. Veterans are encouraged to chat online anonymously with a counselor during the operating hours of 4:00pm -7:30am EST Daily. Friends and family members of a veteran in crisis are also welcomed to use Veterans Chat.

Dr. Phil Avatar Now on Lifeline Gallery

Lifeline and Dr. Phil formed a strategic partnership to prevent suicide during the economic crisis. Partnership efforts include the Dr. Phil avatar launched today on Lifeline Gallery (www.lifelinegallery.org), an online forum filled with hundreds of stories from suicide survivors and suicide prevention advocates. Dr. Phil Helps Lifeline Prevent Suicide on YouTube

Dr. Phil encourages people to call 1-800-273-TALK in a new video posted on the Lifeline YouTube Channel: www.youtube.com/800273TALK. He talks about why people should reach out if they are in suicidal crisis or emotional distress and how there is not shame is asking for help. The clip was taken from a Dr. Phil Show about suicidal behaviors which featured guest Dr. Thomas Joiner, a Lifeline Steering Committee Member.

The Lifeline in New YouTube Abuse and Safety Center

The National Suicide Prevention Lifeline has partnered with YouTube to offer suicide prevention resources to the YouTube online community. Lifeline content on the new YouTube Abuse and Safety Center includes information on what to do if someone on YouTube may be at risk of suicide or if someone posts harmful messages about suicide on the site. Also posted are the Lifeline number, a PSA and a link to the Lifeline channel where one can find suicide warning signs.

The Lifeline Network Answers Over 1 Million Calls!

The National Suicide Prevention Lifeline network of more than 140 crisis centers has answered its one millionth call since the hotline was launched on Jan. 1, 2005. "The Lifeline reached this significant milestone because more people in emotional distress or suicidal crisis are becoming aware that help is available just by picking up the telephone and dialing 1-800-273-TALK," said the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration's acting administrator, Eric Broderick, D.D.S, M.P.H.
