Everybody has a role to play in preventing suicide, and the 988 Lifeline has lots of ways you can take part. With your help, we can spread awareness about suicide prevention and mental health, and save lives.

Research shows people who are having thoughts of suicide feel relief when someone asks after them in a caring way. Findings suggest acknowledging and talking about suicide may reduce suicidal ideation.

A number of studies have indicated that when lethal means are made less available or less deadly, suicide rates by that method decline, and frequently suicide rates overall decline.

Individuals are more likely to feel less depressed, less suicidal, less overwhelmed, and more hopeful by after speaking to someone who listens without judgment.

Studies indicate that helping someone at risk create a network of resources and individuals for support and safety can help them take positive action and reduce feelings of hopelessness.

Studies have also shown that brief, low cost intervention and supportive, ongoing contact may be an important part of suicide prevention, especially for individuals after they have been discharged from hospitals or care services.

The decision to share one’s lived experience of suicide should not be taken lightly. If you are considering sharing your story, we recommend that you use this storytelling checklist to help determine how to share your story safely and effectively – for yourself and others.

The 988 Lifeline is made up of a national network of local crisis centers, which answer all calls to the 988 Lifeline as well as calls from their local communities. Contact your local crisis center to find out how you can donate to help support them.

You can also choose to donate to the 988 Lifeline program and its administrator. The 988 Lifeline is funded by SAMHSA and administered by Vibrant Emotional Health, a 501c3 org. Your online gift will be used to support the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline (formerly known as the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline) and other programs and activities of Vibrant.
