SAMHSA's Center for Mental Health Services Links:

  • CMHS is focused on providing resources to aid in the recovery process. The links below are designed to assist people in storm-damaged areas and the workers who are taking care of those who have been devastated by Hurricane Katrina.

FEMA:

  • Affected residents and business owners in the designated Counties can begin the disaster application process by registering online at: http://www.fema.gov or by calling 1-800-621-FEMA (3362), or 1-800-462-7585 (TTY)
  • FEMA has information on rescue/recovery and evacuation updates.

  • Anyone in need of housing or located a county that has been declared a disaster area and needs individual diaster relief should call FEMA or access them via the internet. Most libraries are offering free internet service to diaster victims.

The Red Cross:

  • For missing persons:
    The first place to look is the Family Link Registry at the Red Cross. It has listings of families looking for loved ones and evacuees that have registered with the Red Cross. The site can be accessed at www.redcross.org or by phone at 1-877-LOVED-1S (1-877-568-3317)
  • Donations to the Red Cross can be made at:
    1.800.HELP NOW or by visiting http://www.redcross.org/.

American Psychological Association (APA):

America's Second Harvest:

  • America's Second Harvest is a nationwide hunger-relief network distributes food and grocery products to people who cannot afford to buy groceries. Through their website you may use their zip code and state locator to find the food bank nearest you. Visit their website http://www.secondharvest.org/ or call 1-800-771-2303.

Centers for Disease Control and Prevention:

  • Their site provides useful resources on how to cope with a diaster or traumatic event, information on the long term impact of such events and tips on how to talk about diasters. For more information please visit http://www.bt.cdc.gov/mentalhealth/.

Government Benefits:

Helpline for Alzheimer's/Dementia Patients and/or Families:

  • The Alzheimer's Association is a 24 hour a day emergency contact center and offers crisis assistance in all languages. They can be reached by calling 1-800- 272-3900.

Housing and Urban Development (HUD):

  • HUD has developed a single toll-free housing hotline to assist the victims of Hurricane Katrina. Please call 1-888-297-8685.

Medicare and Medicare Services:

  • May be reached by calling (202)690-6145

Operation Hope:

  • A good resource for anyone affected by Hurricane Katrina and needs help obtaining lost or destroyed personal identification, including social security numbers, or financial documents. They also provide emergency budget counseling and credit management and provide assistance for anyone needing to defer mortgage payments or seeking help with creditors.
