Media Outreach Toolkit

Five Steps To Launch Your Campaign

To plan and launch your campaign, just follow these five steps:

1) Decide what target audience(s) you want to reach. Your campaign will be more successful if you tailor your messages to the public whom you want to take action and who will benefit as a result of your outreach. Are you talking to public officials, employers, students, seniors, or a combination of these audiences? The Marketing Activities section of this kit contains public service announcements (PSAs) and other materials aimed at two audiences who are at high risk for suicide: 2) Decide what kind of event or activity would reach this audience best.
  • To reach public officials, you may want to hold an educational forum featuring experts in the mental health field and discussing the latest available treatments.
  • To reach employers, you could conduct a survey or study showing the impact on businesses? bottom lines when employees get help for mental health problems.
  • To reach students, perhaps a run or walk would garner the most participation. Plan your event logistics with a timeline and assigned roles and responsibilities.
3) Develop partnerships and sponsorships with other organizations in your community that have a stake in mental health issues to extend your resources and reach.

4) Publicize your event ahead of time by customizing the media materials and PSAs and distributing them with additional marketing materials to local media outlets and other venues in your area.

5) Conduct your event and share the results and lessons learned by using the customer satisfaction survey or by e-mailing the Lifeline Communications Team at lifeline@samhsa.hhs.gov.
